The Magic of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into the face with the purpose of restoring a youthful appearance. These substances are used to put more volume into thin lips, reduce wrinkles, as well as fine lines and creases. Fillers have been in use since the FDA approved them in 1981. Because of the considerable facial improvements that these substances have brought, they have increasingly gained popularity since their introduction.
The Different Types of Fillers Used

There are three types of dermal fillers: collagen-based, fillers based on hyaluronic acid and fillers based on calcium hydroxylapatite. Collagen-based fillers can be bovine collagen or porcine collagen. As there have been incidences of allergy with this type of filler, patients who choose this need to be tested for allergic reactions before it is actually injected into the patients face. Hyaluronic acid as a natural substance has been found to provide a significant contribution to the skin. Dermal fillers based from this substance have been reported to create volume, giving the face a youthful and healthy look. As compared to collagen-based fillers, hyaluronic acid has a lesser incidence of allergy. Hydroxyl apatite can be naturally found in the human body. As facial filler, hydroxyl apatite treats deep frown lines and creases. It also enhances the cheeks' fullness. Of the other types of fillers, the hydroxyl apatite filler is the longest lasting.

Benefits of Using Injected Fillers

Injected facial fillers have been the more preferred choice for enhancing facial features, as well as in achieving a more youthful look. Since they do not require surgery, there is a lesser possibility for complications and infections. Also, there is no need for a recovery period when using these as compared to surgical face lifts. As soon as the filling session is done, the patient can go about her usual daily routine. Aside from achieving fast results, fillers also give a natural youthful appearance that surgical face lifts are unable to do instantly.

Disadvantages of Using Injected Fillers

Admittedly, the biggest disadvantage of using injected facial filler is its longevity. As these substances have been absorbed by the body, the youthful appearance only lasts for a limited amount of time. This can lead to repeated trips to the dermatology clinic to have fillers injected into the face again. In the long run, dermal fillers may prove to be more expensive than surgical face lifts. Also, allergic reaction is always a possibility with dermal fillers, as foreign substances are injected into the face.
