A majority of world's population today suffers from the dry skin syndrome and the phenomenon only goes on to worsen during the autumn and winter seasons. The effect of dry skin is most commonly observed on the face, hands, arms and legs which are incidentally the most exposed areas of the body. Apart from heredity, aging effects and overuse of chemical products are regarded as the prime reasons for the dry skin effect. Dry skin can lead to rashes and more often than not is accompanied by itchiness and skin redness. Always bathe in lukewarm water as hot water has a tendency to dry out the skin. Additionally bathe only once a day and that too for not more than 15 minutes. Avoid the usage of harsh soaps as they can adversely react with the skin. Moisturizing shower gels and bath additives are recommended substitutes for soap. Never scrub hard either with your hands or the soap while bathing because this can strip the skin of essential oils leaving it even drier than before. After bathing, gently dab your body with a towel to dry yourself. Usage of skin care products such as Vaseline petroleum jelly, moisturizers and lotions immediately following bath is also recommended as these help the skin to retain its moisture.
Though expensive, usage of humidifiers especially during winters can facilitate in reducing the dry skin effect. During summers, make a conscious effort to sweat less as this can lower the water content in the body and in turn result in dryness and itching. Drinking plenty of water too is recommended as these help the skin to remain hydrated. Additionally, diet also plays a key role in the elimination of the dry skin effect. Eating a balanced diet which includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and foods rich in vitamin A and B can contribute towards growth of a healthier skin. Avoid processed sugars and caffeine foods as these absorb water and in turn lead to the dehydration of the skin. Shun rough fabrics such as wool because these can scratch the skin and instead resort to wearing cotton clothes.

Regular use of skin care products too is advocated as these apart from protecting the skin also help it to remain moist and hydrated. Remember that instant results are very rare in case of dry skin, therefore it requires utmost patience and concentrated efforts from the concerned person if he has to overcome the problem.
